Been a while since I posted. Busy with grad applications, hanging an exhibit in the gallery of NYC based artist Joan Grubin. Joan works in the basic mediums of paper and scissors, but oh...what she is able to create when she adds light. it gave me a whole new attitude about color, and simplicity. The show runs through March 18, at Lord Gallery- Orono, Maine.
As for me- I have completed several new pieces, one a large wood panel collaged with map, and overpainted with acrylic and cara d'ache. The others are inspired by the environments of Louise Nevelson- the little worlds she creates inside her complex installations. I am doing one canvas and one set of 8x8 wooden panels, set in a grid. I am overlaying acrylic with oils in the grid. I love the depth I am able to get with the oils. but, first layers on and I must now wait...however, the canvas is in acrylic, graphite- my usual you name it I put it on method. So I continually scratch at it and add layers. Can I say I love this one? Probably, since I am the only one who ever sees this blog anyway.
grad school! I have been accepted into UMass/Dartmouth's College of Visual and Performing Art, MECA, and UMaine. I am waiting on word about assistantships, as well as acceptance/rejection from VCFA in Vermont, BU, Mass/Art, and UNH. I got the acceptance from Dartmouth on Friday and it was such a thrill, I walked in the snowstorm right down to the post office to mail the return confirmation...conditional on assistantship. How will I do such a crazy assed thing so far away? Dunno. But crazier things jave been done..some of them by me.
Side note: In order to graduate with my BFA, the final class of math had to be taken (and passed). I had serious doubts. Serious. And it started out very rocky...alot of me saying no way, putting up this huge wall.
I am two exams into it, which is halfway. I aced both of them, missing only one point in the 2nd- which included calculations I never thought I would do. OK. It sounds like boasting. But if you knew me...which I do- its just astonishment.
Ok. photos of new work- in progress, and one completed.
